Our friend at the New York Innovative Theatre Awards Foundation has written a concise blog posting about how the Off Off Broadway community (and all the performing arts here) can help themselves by joining the local community board.  It's not something that ever occurred to us, but it makes good sense.  Check it out.

Lottery Opens for Affordable Housing in Jamaica, Queens -- no fee to apply!

from our friends at chashama, via the Greater Jamaica Development Corporation newsletter:

"When the Queens Family Court moved to a new building in Jamaica in 2003, the future of its former home at 89-14 Parsons Boulevard was uncertain. Would the ornate 1928 structure become a school, a precinct house, an office building?

Today, the future has arrived: In a development spearheaded by the New York City Economic Development Corporation, led by Deputy Mayor Robert C. Lieber and realized by The Dermot Company, the Italian-Renaissance-style facade has been gracefully married to a 12-story glass residential tower. The first tenants are scheduled to move in early next year. The structure, called MODA, comprises nearly 350 units of affordable and market-rate rental housing, new shops and 500 parking spots.

A lottery for the low-and middle-income apartments -- 64% of the units -- has just been announced; leasing of the market-rate units will start in January 2010. GJDC is helping to attract retailers to the 55,000 square feet of retail space on the ground and mezzanine levels.

According to The Dermot Company's Vice President of Development Drew Spitler, "We felt that this area, with its excellent transportation and new rezoning plan, was ready for an attractive residential development."

From the Rockefeller Foundation press release (10/14):

"Today the Rockefeller Foundation’s President Dr. Judith Rodin announced the 18 winners of the Foundation’s 2009 New York City Cultural Innovation Fund competition – and with it a $2.7 million grant to support local New York City art and artists. Each of these 18 New York City-based organizations will receive a two-year grant of up to $250,000, underscoring the Foundation’s commitment to creative expression and innovation, and the impact and influence creativity has towards social progress.

'The Rockefeller Foundation is pleased to continue our support of art and creativity right here in our home town of New York City,' said Dr. Judith Rodin, President of the Rockefeller Foundation. 'In today’s economy, our artists and communities need support to continue to build an innovative creative sector that provokes us to react, question, and learn.'

Many of this year’s winners—selected from more than 500 diverse projects—focus on innovative survival strategies for the arts during a time of severe economic decline. Fresh business models, imaginative prototypes for public/private partnerships, entrepreneurial approaches to capital generation, artist peer loan programs, and new spins on marketing, especially to rapidly growing Latino communities, are strong themes among the winning entries."
