Two Less Drinks, Tell Albany What
You Think!

Arts Advocacy Day in Albany
Wednesday, February 24, 2010

For the price of two beers or two drinks, you can go to the
state capitol in Albany with us to tell the governor how much you care
about arts funding. There is a proposed 13% cut in NY State arts
funding...but there's still time to stop or minimize the cuts.  Remember,
the cuts are open for debate until April.

Reserve Your Seat Today!
Pay Online here.

Date: Wednesday, February 24, 2010
Time: 5:30 am to 8 pm
Cost: $15 per person
Buses Depart from: Adam Clayton Powell Jr. State Office Bldg
(163 WEST 125TH STREET) Promptly at 5:30 am

The reality of dwindling arts funding often creates the appearance
that artist and arts organizations must compete with one another. In
our commitment to advancing the arts in our communities, we believe
today's environment demands that we work more closely together. Let's
help to ensure that New York City, known as the "cultural capital of
the world" remains vibrant for generations to come.

Harlem Arts Alliance requests that artist and representatives from
arts organizations, from every borough, join us for a day of arts
advocacy in Albany.  Call (347) 735-4280 for more information.

Lower Manhattan Arts Leaders

The New York Times has an article about the efforts of Lower Manhattan arts companies to band together to combat the recent economic downturn.  This new group, calling itself Lower Manhattan Arts Leaders, has begun advocacy efforts to help policy makers and government officials understand their contributions and what they need to continue to survive.  (Thanks to blogger Matt Freeman for bringing the article to our attention.)

Here at NYC Performing Arts Spaces, we worked closely with many of these groups during the development of NYC Theatre Spaces in 2006 - groups like Blue Coyote Theater Group and the Access Theater, HERE Arts Center, Soho Rep, Battery Dance and Dance New Amsterdam. Besides ongoing advocacy, one upcoming project is Fall Downtown, an arts event/festival in the autumn with the participation of many member groups to raise awareness of their work.  Here's hoping these efforts keep arts centers healthy, productive and vital in a difficult financial climate.

Be sure to check back here in the coming weeks - we've closed our own economic impact survey and will have the results soon.
