For those musicians and composers in your life, taking up space in your apartment with their noise-making...  steer them to our Con Edision Musicians' Residency:  Composition Program, which is currently taking applications. We're putting six composers in residence in three facilites; Turtle Bay Music School, Florence E. Smith Community Center in Corona, Queens and Flushing Town Hall in historic Flushing.  (Site of the Flushing Remonstrance.  You've never heard of it?  Click here and find out.)

Many thanks to the Clyde Fitch Report and American Opera Projects for the shout outs.

In other news...if you haven't already seen it, check out the New York Innovative Theater Foundation's latest study, a ground-breaking demographic survey of Off Off Broadway artists.

Our friends at Fourth Arts Block are throwing a party this weekend, with performance previews from groups like Eva Dean Dance, Metropolitan Playhouse, and the New York Neo-Futurists, along with a lively indoor/outdoor program from DanceNOW.  You can silk screen t-shirts, take beginning salsa lessons and enjoy discounted Block Party shopping.  So head down there this Saturday from 1 to 7 PM, and enjoy the free stuff and street life.  And months from now, when your friends are talking about the great show they saw, you can be ultra-hip and supercool and talk about seeing the free preview last September.

MusiCares

One of the great things about our work here is getting to know others in the field, those who are interested in performing arts, artists and working to make it all come together.  One organization we've worked with is a terrific group called MusiCares.  MusiCares provides a safety net of financial assistance to musicians and people who work in the music field, who find themselves in a personal/medical/financial or addiction crisis.  They offer help to artists that's quick, confidential and respectful.

They have an office here in NYC, but are also set up to help in Santa Monica, Austin and Nashville.  If you've not heard of them, go to their site and show them some love.

Got the summertime blahs?  Don't know what's happening career-wise?  Want to do something business-wise to kick yourself in the pants?  Professionally? Head down to Lower Manhattan Cultural Council Wed July 22.  LMCC's Director of Grants and Services, Kay Takeda, will be delivering a workshop on the current funding scene for artists, filled with basic info on researching and prepping grant applications.  Find out about LMCC's grant programs for artists plus a whole lot more.  The session is free, but space is limited and RSVPs are required.

chashama Pirate Party Pig Roast

Nothing gives summer a kick in the keester like a pirate party, so look sharp and move smartly to chashama's annual Pirate Pig Roast.  Dance the hornpipe, throw down some grog, and feast on BBQ and roast pig.  (A vegan buffet is also provided!)  A water taxi ride is included in the ticket price.

We're hoisting the colors for chashama as our two organizations work closely together for the benefit of the performing arts communities in NYC.  Anita Durst, Director of chashama, is a member of our board.

But enough of that landlubber-speak. Click here for directions and details about the party for corsairs and sea dogs alike.
