Thanks for our friends at ART/NY for this heads up.  Following up on Deputy Mayor Patricia Harris' announcement last week at the Crain's "Future of New York" conference, the NYC Department of Cultural Affairs, in conjunction with NYC Economic Development Corporation, have announced RFPs for the five initiatives to strengthen the cultural sector in New York City.  (Read the Mayor's press release here.)  These five initiatives include increasing access to city properties for visual arts and performances, job training for displaced arts workers, and low-cost studio space at the Brooklyn Army Terminal in cooperation with Chashama.

Deputy Mayor Patricia Harris announced at a Crain's "Future of New York" conference on Wednesday a series of five new initiatives to support new exhibition and performance space in New York City.  Details forthcoming, but Crain's wrote up the announcement on its website yesterday.

Our friends at Fourth Arts Block are throwing a party this weekend, with performance previews from groups like Eva Dean Dance, Metropolitan Playhouse, and the New York Neo-Futurists, along with a lively indoor/outdoor program from DanceNOW.  You can silk screen t-shirts, take beginning salsa lessons and enjoy discounted Block Party shopping.  So head down there this Saturday from 1 to 7 PM, and enjoy the free stuff and street life.  And months from now, when your friends are talking about the great show they saw, you can be ultra-hip and supercool and talk about seeing the free preview last September.

Money for Queens Artists

From our friends at Dance/NYC, where we spotted this announcement...the Queens Council on the Arts has an upcoming deadline for the Queens Community Arts Fund, open to Queens-based nonprofit organizations and individual artists who are residents of Queens. For organizations, the deadline is September 24.  For individuals, it's October 8.  Grants are for $1,000 to $5,000 for project support.  Check out guidelines and applications here.

For Something Everyone Says is Dead, It Sure Makes a Lot of Money

There's a new study out by the Off Broadway Alliance, which tracks a $461.3 million dollar economic impact on the city through Off Broadway.  This includes for profit, and nonprofit - such as the Celia Cruz bio-play at New World Stages - and nonprofits, like Manhattan Theatre Club's production of Adam Bock's "The Receptionist." 

As Variety notes, this figure does not come within range of the economic impact of Broadway - estimated in 06-07 to be around five billion. But it's not too shabby either.
