From our friends at the New York Foundation for the Arts:

The New York Foundation for the Arts (NYFA) is now accepting applications for the “Artist as Entrepreneur” Boot Camp. Applications are due on April 26 and classes begin June 12, 2010. The Boot Camp will provide artists working in all disciplines (literary, media, performing and visual) with the business skills they need to further their artistic careers. There is no charge for participation.

The Boot Camp begins on June 12 and will take place over 5 day-long sessions at NYFA’s office at 20 Jay Street in DUMBO. Participating artists can expect the sessions to spark goals and help to define concrete steps to building a business plan that can lead to financial security.

The Boot Camp is open to artists and members of creative teams working all disciplines. They must be residents of New York City and have internet access. The application is due on April 26 and is currently available on NYFA’s website.

For questions, please contact Peter Cobb at pcobb@nyfa.org or Felicity Hogan at Clearning@nyfa.org.

The New York Foundation for the Arts is opening up their Affordable Workspace for Artists program.  If you're an artist - or you're running a small arts organization - and you've been slammed by the recession, you may be eligible for cheap admin space in NYFA's offices on Jay Street in DUMBO.  (You still qualify if you're a NYFA-affiliated artist as well; you're a NYFA Fellow, Sponsored Project, etc.)

So, if this is something you need, click here for information, eligibilty, and applications.

Bring books, old art supplies, Mom's saucepan and your ex's CDs, and head down to the NYFA Swap on Jay Street in DUMBO, Thursday night at 6 PM. A five buck entry fee gets you in the door so you can haggle and bargain to your heart's delight.  And all for a good cause.  Details here.

Don't Let the Photo Dissuade You from Applying!

The New York Foundation for the Arts (NYFA) has announced that applications for their 2009-2010 Artists' Fellowships will be made available on their website in early September, and will be due the first week in November.

NYFA Artists' Fellowships are $7,000 cash awards made to individual originating artists living and working in the state of New York for unrestricted use. Grants are awarded in 16 artistic disciplines, with applications accepted in eight categories each year.

Since the awards began in 1985, NYFA has awarded over $22 million to over 3,688 artists. In 2009, NYFA awarded 131 Fellowships to 134 artists, with six of them working in a collaboration.

Of course, thousands of artists will apply for these fellowships (nice of NYFA to include this reality-check photo, which they labelled as "mountains of applications for NYFA's 2009 Artists' Fellowship program"...).

We're here to say: "APPLY!"  This blog entry is your advanced notice and call to action: use these lazy, hazy days of summer to start updating your CV, refining your artist's statement, and getting set to apply for a NYFA Artists' Fellowship in early September!  Go get 'em!
