Making Moves in Jamaica

About a week ago, I got the chance to get out of Midtown for a couple of hours and visit the Jamaica Performing Arts Center in Jamaica, Queens.  The General Manager there was nice enough to give me a tour of the newly-renovated facility, which is in a beautiful 1858  landmark building (the former First Reformed Dutch Church of Jamaica).  The building houses a 400-seat performance space as well as rehearsal space.  (Check out the listings here.)

The Jamaica Performing Arts Center will also be hosting Making Moves, a day-long dance festival taking place on May 1, 2010.  It's part of Jamaica Flux: Workspaces & Windows 2010, the third edition of Jamaica Center for Arts and Learning’s site-specific, public art exhibition. There are three opportunities for dance companies, ranging from a 15-minute performance with a $200 stipend to a 45-minute piece with a $3,500 stipend.  Go to their website to read all the details and check out the RFP:  http://jcal.org/performing_arts/MakingMoves.html  For interested groups, tours of the facility will be given January 5-8, 2010.  Applications are due January 18, 2010.

Performing DIY-Types Sought for New Year's Bash: "Transmutation"

Party people Winkel and Balktick have entertained the underground and NYC fringe folk for years (view their Flickr photos to see what colorful mayhem you've missed).  So, of course, they're pulling out all the stops for New Year's Eve 2010 and invite performing artists to be a part of the fun.

Fittingly called "Transmutation", the NYE 2010 fête-performance will be held on "the entire second floor of a 100-year-old warehouse featuring two enormous rooms with panoramic windows, 16' riggable ceilings, round columns, and level concrete floors."  There's a lot of alchemic possibility there...

All the details are spelled out in this offical RFP:  Transmutation.pdf

If, after reading the PDF, you find your interest piqued, bring your questions, ideas and creative pals to the New Year's Eve Meeting & Social:

Tuesday, November 24 at Winkel's.

135 Plymouth St #208 in Dumbo, Brooklyn.  F to York St, A/C to High St.
Food and drink will be served.

Doors at 7:30 PM. Meeting at 8 PM.
At 9 PM, everyone will be shuttled to the warehouse for a walkthrough of the space.  By 11 PM, everyone will be back in Dumbo.

RSVP to alchemy@wandbnyc.com requested, but not required.  There will be another meeting in a few weeks.

Thanks for our friends at ART/NY for this heads up.  Following up on Deputy Mayor Patricia Harris' announcement last week at the Crain's "Future of New York" conference, the NYC Department of Cultural Affairs, in conjunction with NYC Economic Development Corporation, have announced RFPs for the five initiatives to strengthen the cultural sector in New York City.  (Read the Mayor's press release here.)  These five initiatives include increasing access to city properties for visual arts and performances, job training for displaced arts workers, and low-cost studio space at the Brooklyn Army Terminal in cooperation with Chashama.
