About a week ago, I got the chance to get out of Midtown for a couple of hours and visit the Jamaica Performing Arts Center in Jamaica, Queens. The General Manager there was nice enough to give me a tour of the newly-renovated facility, which is in a beautiful 1858 landmark building (the former First Reformed Dutch Church of Jamaica). The building houses a 400-seat performance space as well as rehearsal space. (Check out the listings here.)
The Jamaica Performing Arts Center will also be hosting Making Moves, a day-long dance festival taking place on May 1, 2010. It's part of Jamaica Flux: Workspaces & Windows 2010, the third edition of Jamaica Center for Arts and Learning’s site-specific, public art exhibition. There are three opportunities for dance companies, ranging from a 15-minute performance with a $200 stipend to a 45-minute piece with a $3,500 stipend.
